Biography

At the University of Memphis, Keith Butler developed a reputation as a fierce linebacker. He carried that intensity into the NFL and a long career with the Seattle Seahawks. Now, he passes that winning spirit down to current NFL players. First-year Cleveland Browns linebacker coach, Keith Butler, began his coaching career in 1990 at the University of Memphis. He coached at Memphis until 1998, where his total defense was listed 27th nationally; 45th in scoring defense and 16th in punt returns in 1997. He then served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Arkansas State. Butler is now the defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Born in Anniston, Alabama, Butler joined the University of Memphis as an inside linebacker. A three-year starter, he was ranked the team’s top tackler in both his junior and senior seasons. Finishing his U of M career with 384 total tackles and seven pass interceptions, he was named to the 1977 All-South Independent team and the Associated Press All-American squad. Drafted by the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League, Coach Butler started in three games his rookie season, and remained a regular for the Seahawks for 10 years. A five-year defensive captain for the Seahawks, he started 132 of 146 career games, and currently ranks 3rd in games played and started for the Seahawks. Additionally, he ranks as the second all-time leading Seahawk tackler; with 813. Keith and his wife, Janet, have three sons – Blake, Brandon and Brett.
