2000 Professional Team of the Year

Tennessee Titans

Once the "new" Tennessee Titans settled into their new Adelphia Coliseum home, they dared other teams to trespass. With the help of a stadium full of vocal followers, no opponent stood a chance. The Titans were unblemished at Adelphia and set Middle Tennessee abuzz and stretched to within a yard of winning the Super Bowl. When the dust settled, the AFC Champion Tennessee Titans ended their inaugural regular season play with an outstanding 13-3 regular season mark. The Titans finished the season with a second-place finish in the AFC Central Division and halted a six-year postseason drought.

The Titans were the only team in the AFC to win every home game during the regular season and to defeat the teams with the top records in each conference (St. Louis and Jacksonville). The Titans handed the Rams their first loss of the season with a 24-21 win in Week 8. The Titans also gave Jacksonville, the AFC Central Division champions, its only two losses of the season with a 20-19 road win in Week 3 and a 41-14 route at Adelphia Coliseum in Week 15. Both clubs were 0-3 against the Titans while posting a combined 27-2 mark against the rest of the League.

In 1999, the Titans put together a streak of 13 consecutive wins against AFC Central Division opponents dating back to last season. It marks the longest streak in history of the AFC Central Division and the third longest in the NFL since the 1970 merger.

To cap off this outstanding season, the Titans posted playoff wins over the Buffalo Bills 22-16 at Adelphia Coliseum in the opening round. This playoff win will go into NFL record books as a result of the "Music City Miracle," which took place on the final play of the game and resulted in the Titans returning the kickoff for a touchdown. They next defeated lndianapolis by a count of 19-16 at the RCA Dome. The Titans reached the Super Bowl by defeating Jacksonville for the third time.

Despite losing Super Bowl XXXIV on the last play of the game by coming up one yard short of the goal line, the Tennessee Titans spent the 1999-2000 NFL season convincing the nation they were champions. The team boasted a final 16-3 mark for the season.
