The Lady
Flames Soccer team has the distinct privilege of being the first
Lee University team to bring home a NAIA National Championship
banner for their school. Though coming close in 2006 with a
second place finish and a final four trip in 2007, they would
not be denied in the National Women's Soccer Championship staged
at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla.
(Dec. 1-6.) with the 3-0 victory over an unbeaten Concordia
University (Ore.) club.
The 2008
NAIA National Soccer Coach of the Year, Matt Yelton was hired
as the Lee Women's soccer coach in 2002 and brought top-notch
student athletes to the Lee campus quickly, as proven by his
eight NAIA Academic Scholars who earned a 3.5 GPA or better
and put together an impressive record of 136-27-4 along the
way. Coach Yelton said his team's motto all year had been
"we do what we do and we do it well." He was right
on target as the Lady Flames won their seventh straight Southern
States Athletic Conference Title.
The Lady
Flames set a new record with a 24-1-1 mark, defeating five
teams that were ranked in the Top 10 and three were ranked
in the Top 5 on their way to the top spot.
