of the Year Doug Dickey

 |
As a player, coach and athletic
director, Doug Dickey set a standard for those around him. The standard? Settling
for nothing less than your best. That's why University of Tennessee athletic director,
Doug Dickey, has received numerous honors that underscore his position as one
of the nation's most successful college sports administrators. Over
a span of 35 years, Dickey has been the principal force on the University of Tennessee
Sports scene: first as head football coach winning two Southeastern Conference
football championships; and since 1985, directing a Volunteer athletic department
that has been a model of consistent performance. |
| Furthermore,
Doug Dickey has also served as a major driving force leading
the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame to a new level of statewide
acceptance and membership. Dickey, working with elected
officials from the State of Tennessee and Metropolitan
Nashville Davidson County, has been instrumental in the
successful completion of the new Tennessee Sports Hall
of Fame Museum in Nashville. |

Growing up in Gainesville,
Florida, Dickey was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Florida
from then head football coach Bob Woodruff. Following
graduation and a stint in the armed services, Dickey joined Frank Broyles' staff
at the University of Arkansas, where he coached for six years. He was then offered
and accepted the head football coaching position at the University of Tennessee
by athletic director Bob Woodruff. Dickey remained at Tennessee for six years
before returning to his alma mater, where he coached for another nine years. |
| A
college football coach for 22 years before moving into the business world in 1980,
Dickey became only the fourth athletic director in UT history when he was named
to replace Bob Woodruff on his retirement in 1985. His
coaching record with the Vols was 46-15-4, and included several SEC championships. | |
