A Nashville
native and graduate of Hillsboro High School, June Stewart
is recognized for her many contributions to Vanderbilt athletics
and to the field of collegiate sports administration. Stewart
attended Christian College in Columbia, Missouri and graduated
with an Associate Degree in business before going to work
in the Vanderbilt Athletic Department in 1973 as the Secretary
for Sports Information and the National Commodore Club. Over
the years, Stewart rose through the ranks from Assistant Sports
Information Director to Associate Athletic Director at her
retirement in 2003.

When June
joined Vanderbilt, she was one of very few women employed
by an athletic department of a major university. During her
thirty years in athletic administration, June has been on
the front lines for many changes in collegiate athletics including
the widespread introduction of women's participation and the
growing importance of marketing and technology. Her many responsibilities
have included serving in the officer rotation and on the Executive
Board of the College Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA), on the NCAA Women's Basketball Committee and three
years on the SEC Executive Committee. Currently, Stewart is
working with the Nashville Sports Council Steering Committee
on the 2004 SEC Women's Basketball Tournament.
Stewart's
athletic career has been highly regarded as she has received
the All American Foundation Scoop Hudgins SID Award, the Lifetime
Achievement Award from CoSIDA, the Nashville Sports Council
Volunteer of the Year Award, the Reese L. Smith Award for
Achievement and Community Service, the CoSIDA Trailblazer
Award and induction into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame. Stewart
was appointed to the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Board of
Directors in 1995. June's husband, Bill Stewart, a long-time
athletic administrator died in 2001. They have three children.
