A
native of Memphis, Billy Fletcher earned All-American honors playing quarterback
at South Side High School where he also played basketball, baseball, and ran track.
Fletcher
was a member of South Side's state championship track team in the 4 X 400 and
4 x 800 relays.
Following
graduation, Fletcher was recruited by major colleges and universities across the
country, but he chose to stay at home and play for Memphis State University. Fletcher
played for the Tigers from 1963-65 and it was during that period that Memphis
State posted its best six-year record in school history.
