Holloway’s baseball jersey to be retired

Condredge Holloway, who was star football and baseball player at Tennessee, will have his No. 1 baseball jersey retired by the school.

The ceremony will take place Saturday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium before the Vols play South Carolina at 1 p.m.

Holloway, who played shortstop for the Vols, joins Todd Helton (No. 3) and Phil Garner (No. 8) to have his jersey retired in baseball. His number will join theirs beyond the outf ield wall at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Holloway was taken in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Montreal Expos in 1971, but decided toplay both football and baseball at Tennessee.

He became the first black starting quarterback in the SEC, earning first-team allconference honors as a quarterback in 1973.

Holloway also was named first-team All-SEC and firstteam All-America as a baseball player in 1975 when he hit .396.

He batted .351 in three seasons at Tennessee and his 27game hitting streak remains thelongest in school history.

He hit .323 or better in all three of his college seasons.

Holloway was named to Tennessee’s All-Century Baseball Team in 2008, and is the only Tennessee athlete named to the all-century teams in both baseball and football.

Holloway is in his 17th season as the Tennessee football team’s assistant athletics director for student-athlete relations and lettermen.
