Eddie Brown came to the University of Tennessee from the Marion County community of Guild, TN in the recruiting class of 1970. And for the next three years he was an integral part of Volunteer teams that compiled a 27-7-2 mark and played in three holiday bowl games. Eddie Brown was captain of the 1973 Tennessee team and earned All-American honors.
Volunteer fans will always remember the exciting play from his safety position returning punts and setting records intercepting opponents passes. He led the team in punt returns in both 1972 and 1973 and his 42 returns for 450 yards in ’72 is the third best mark in Vol history.
Following graduation from the University of Tennessee, Eddie Brown thought his football days were behind him. Not so. Cleveland drafted him in the eighth round and he played for the Browns during the 1974-75 seasons. He was traded to the Washington Redskins in 1975 where he played for Coach George Allen. It was while playing in Washington that he was a member of the Redskins Super Bowl XIV team in 1977 and an All-Pro Selection. That same year Eddie was presented the “Most Valuable Player Award” by Washington Redskins professional football team.
In 1978, he was traded to the Los Angeles Rams where he was again recognized as an All-Pro selection and selected to play in the Pro Bowl. Eddie later played for the USFL Chicago Blitz and the Arizona Wranglers. He was an early “All John Madden Team” selection.
