Biography

Jimmy Cole grew up in Memphis starring in every sport at Messick High School. During his high school career, Jimmy earned 14 varsity letters in football, basketball baseball and track. He was an All-Memphis selection in football, basketball and baseball.

Following high school, this all-around athlete elected to sign with the University of Memphis (Memphis State University) where he starred as a member of the Tigers football team. He earned four varsity letters playing running back, defensive back, was the team punter and returned kicks. He was rewarded for his many talents by being named All-American in 1952. Following his graduation from the University of Memphis, Jimmy became an official in the Southeastern Conference where he served as a back judge.

While officiating in the SEC, Cole worked two Sugar Bowls, two Gator Bowls, two Orange Bowls, two Liberty Bowls and one Cotton Bowl. He moved on to be an official with the National Football League serving as a field judge. During his tenure with the NFL, Jimmy worked two Pro Bowls, numerous play off games and two Championship games.

Jimmy Cole was selected a member of the American Football Foundation Hall of Fame as both a player and an official. He was elected a member of the University of Memphis “M” Club Hall of Fame.
