The Germantown 1995 baseball team had the kind of season to which all high school baseball teams aspire. They dominated like no other team in the nation, compiling a perfect 38-0 record and winning the Tennessee Class AAA Championship. But that was just the beginning of the honors. The Red Devils were ranked as the nation’s number-one team by “USA Today”, “Collegiate Baseball”, “Baseball America” and the Baseball Coaches Association. In addition to the state championship, Germantown’s baseball team won District 14-AAA and Region 7-AAA and claimed championships of the Germantown/Bartlett Invitational and the Upper Deck Classic in Fullerton, California, the most prestigious high school tournament in the country. Jay Hood and Chris Lotterhos were named All-Americans, and Tom Hildebrand was honored by the BCA as All-South Region. Hood, Lotterhos, Hildebrand, and Matt Hale were all-state performers. Coach Phil Clark was named National Coach of the Year by “USA TODAY” and “Collegiate Baseball/Mizuno” and was the Tennessee Class AAA Coach of the Year. Clark was also head coach of the gold-medal-winning West Team at the United States Olympic Festival in Colorado Springs. This was truly a magical year, one that will be remembered by many fans, players, coaches, mothers and fathers in Germantown, and the entire state of Tennessee.
