Biography

W.S. “Babe” Howard was a true pillar of the Millington, Tennessee community. For over 50 years, he served as the President of Millington Telephone Company. Howard’s impact extended far beyond his professional role. He founded the beloved Goat Days family festival and operated a cherished home-style restaurant in Millington. His dedication to public service was unwavering, evidenced by his nearly two decades as a Millington Alderman and 17 years on the Shelby County School Board.

Sports were Howard’s true passion. Like his father before him, he tirelessly sponsored youth sports programs for many years. Recognizing the need for local baseball players to gain exposure, he formed an American Legion team that propelled numerous young athletes to college scholarships and professional careers.

Unsatisfied with the team’s facilities, Howard took matters into his own hands and built Millington Legion Field. In 1989, the town hosted the American Legion World Series, putting it on the national stage. When he parted ways with the American Legion, an opportune moment arose—Team USA selected Millington as its training site, allowing the town to display the prestigious Olympic Rings.

Millington became a hub for international baseball for a decade, hosting teams from Japan, Nicaragua, and even Cuba. USA Stadium brought national recognition to the small town while benefitting local businesses and families. Howard’s support for athletics extended beyond baseball and the USA Stadium, earning him the Ralph Hatley Silver M Award from the University of Memphis for his support of athletics at the University.

Howard’s legacy is one of unwavering commitment to his community, a passion for sports, and a drive to create opportunities for young athletes. His impact on Millington and the lives he touched will be felt for generations to come.
