Biography

Priscilla Gary-Sweeney ran track for Hamilton High School located in Memphis TN, where she was a three-time all-district and all-regional champion in hurdle and a two-time state champion in hurdles. She graduates from Hamilton H.S in 1979 and receive a full- time scholarship from Southwest Community College where she became the all-time leading scorer for the Lady Saluqis, the first female all-American in any sport, and led the Lady Saluqis to their second TJCAA championship in 1982. She was inducted into the Southwest Community College Hall of Fame in 2002. At the conclude of Priscilla career at Southwest she received a scholarship from Kansas State University located in Manhattan, Kansas.

Gary-Sweeney, a two-time letter winner for the Wildcats from 1981-83, became the first K-State women’s basketball All-American in program history at the conclusion of the 1982-83 season. She led the program in scoring during her two seasons in Manhattan, Kansas, and tallied 1,169 career points to currently rank 25th on the K-State career scoring list. She holds the K-State career record for scoring average at 18.3 points per game and ranks third in career field goal percentage (.558) and 33rd in career assists with 172. She was a two-time All-Big Eight First-Team selection, while guiding the program to a pair of Big Eight Conference titles and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program’s first trip to the Elite Eight in 1982. In 1998, Gary-Sweeney was the first K-State women’s basketball player inducted into the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame and in 2009 her number 10 was retired. The program’s hustle award, given each year at the team’s postseason banquet, is named in her honor. In 2017, she was inducted into Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. At the conclusion of her collegiate career she enlisted into the Air Force in 1987.

In 2015 Gary-Sweeney retired from the Air Force where she was nominated as the Tactical Airlift Female female athlete of the Year, Air Force Female Athlete of the Year, Department of Defense Female Athlete of the Year and AAU Rookie of the Year in 1989.
