Biography

Matt Cain is one of the most accomplished Major League pitchers with deep roots in Tennessee baseball. Born in Dothan, Alabama, Cain moved to the Memphis area and attended Houston High School in Germantown, Tennessee, where he became one of the nation’s premier high school pitching prospects.

Cain’s dominant performance at Houston High School led the San Francisco Giants to select him in the first round (25th overall) of the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft. Turning professional straight out of high school, he rapidly ascended through the Giants’ minor league system. In 2005, at 20 years old, Cain made his Major League debut, becoming the youngest player in the National League at the time.

Over a stellar 13-year career with the San Francisco Giants, Cain became the bedrock of the franchise’s pitching staff. Known for his durability and composure, he was a vital part of the Giants’ dynasty era. He was a member of the organization during the 2010, 2012, and 2014 World Series. His contributions in 2010 and 2012 were especially legendary; he did not allow a single earned run during the entire 2010 postseason. Though an injury sidelined him during the 2014 playoffs, his veteran leadership remained a cornerstone of the clubhouse.

A defining moment in baseball history came on June 13, 2012, when Cain pitched the first perfect game in the Giants’ franchise history. Facing the Houston Astros, he retired all 27 batters and recorded 14 strikeouts, tying the record for most strikeouts in a perfect game.

A three-time National League All-Star, Cain finished his career in 2017 with 104 wins, a 3.68 ERA, and 1,694 strikeouts. His legacy as “The Horse,” a nickname earned for his workhorse mentality, solidifies his place among the most successful professional athletes to emerge from the Tennessee high school ranks.
