Marc Gasol is one of the most beloved figures in Memphis sports history, a cornerstone of the “Grit and Grind” era who transformed from a local high school standout into a global basketball icon. While born in Barcelona, Spain, Gasol’s connection to Tennessee began in 2001, when his family moved to Germantown after his brother Pau was drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies. Marc attended Lausanne Collegiate School, where he dominated the interior to earn the 2003 Tennessee Division 2 Mr. Basketball award.
After a successful professional start in Spain, where he was named the 2008 ACB League MVP, Gasol returned to Memphis in 2008. Over the next 11 seasons, he became the heartbeat of the Grizzlies franchise. Standing 7-foot-1, Gasol combined elite defensive instincts with a rare passing touch for a center. In 2013, he became the first player in Grizzlies history to be named NBA Defensive Player of the Year and led the team to its first Western Conference Finals appearance that season.
Gasol’s tenure in Memphis was marked by consistent excellence, including three NBA All-Star selections and two All-NBA Team nods. He remains the franchise’s all-time leader in rebounds (5,942), blocks (1,135), and minutes played (25,917), and ranks second in career points. The Grizzlies honored his legacy in 2024 by retiring his No. 33 jersey, making him the second player in franchise history to receive this honor.
Beyond Memphis, Gasol’s career reached the ultimate pinnacle in 2019 when he helped lead the Toronto Raptors to an NBA Championship. Internationally, he was a fixture for the Spanish National Team, winning two Olympic silver medals and two FIBA World Cup gold medals.
Off the court, Gasol’s impact on the Memphis community was profound. He supported St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and was involved in local youth basketball, embracing the city as his second home. His induction into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame celebrates a “Memphis-made” legend whose grit, intelligence, and heart defined a generation of Tennessee basketball.
