Biography

Last year, only one team in Tennessee advanced to be the national champion of their sport. The Cumberland University Bulldogs baseball team, coached by Woody Hunt, was just the team to do it. The Bulldogs of Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee advanced through tournament play with 15 consecutive victories. After winning the Trans-South Conference Championship, the Regional and the Super Regional Tournaments, the Bulldogs found themselves facing the number one ranked team in the country, the Oklahoma City Stars, in the NAIA College World Series title game. The stage was set and the Bulldogs came from behind to defeat the Stars 10-3. Donnie Burkhalter, first baseman, was named MVP of the World Series; Charlie MacFarland, outfielder, received All-America honors and four additional players made the All-Tournament team. The Bulldogs set a school record for most wins in a season with a record of 59-21. In his career at Cumberland, Woody Hunt has coached more than forty All-Americans, 63 players who went on to play professionally.
