Ken Dugan is one of the best things to happen to baseball in Tennessee. As head baseball coach at Nashville’s David Lipscomb University, Dugan led his teams to a remarkable 1,127 victories during a thirty-year career, making him one of the winningest collegiate coaches of all-time. He is also well known and respected as an author of many books on coaching baseball. While at Lipscomb, Dugan guided Bison teams to fourteen district, five area, and two NAIA national championships. He led his program to fifty-win seasons twice and reached the forty-win mark eight times. Over the years, Dugan produced thirty-two All-Americans and helped several players move up to professional baseball. Many of his players also have had an impact on the state of Tennessee as high school baseball coaches. Dugan became one of the great collegiate baseball coaches by first being perhaps Lipscomb’s greatest player (1954-1957). His .456 batting average and .824 slugging percentage in 1956 still stand as school records. It comes as no surprise that his brother, Jerry Dugan, won over 500 games while coaching high school basketball in Alabama. Winning seems to run in the Dugan family; a fact that Lipscomb University, and Tennessee, will remember forever.
