Biography

Doug Mathews is synonymous with Tennessee football, renowned as a coach, player, and media personality.

A native of Oklahoma, Mathews played at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, then playing his final two seasons at Vanderbilt before embarking on a celebrated coaching career. As an assistant at the University of Tennessee under Johnny Majors, Mathews helped develop championship-caliber defenses and mentored countless Vols who went on to NFL careers. His no-nonsense style and deep understanding of the game made him one of the most respected defensive minds in the SEC.

Beyond the sidelines, Mathews became a beloved voice in Tennessee sports media, known for his insight, storytelling, and passion for the game. His long-running radio work connected generations of fans to the traditions of Tennessee football.

Doug Mathews’ induction into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame honors a lifetime of service to the sport as a player, coach, and broadcaster whose influence resonates across the Volunteer State.
