Biography

Charles McRae was one of the most dominant offensive linemen in University of Tennessee history, serving as a pillar of the Volunteers’ front during a golden era for the program. A native of Clinton, Tennessee, McRae excelled at Clinton High School before arriving in Knoxville, where he initially played on the defensive line before transitioning to offensive tackle—a move that would define his legendary career.

Standing 6-foot-7 and weighing over 300 pounds, McRae combined his massive frame with the athleticism of a former defensive player. From 1987 to 1990, he helped lead the Volunteers to back-to-back Southeastern Conference championships in 1989 and 1990. During that span, the Vols compiled a 20-3-2 record and secured major bowl victories in the Cotton and Sugar Bowls. In 1990, McRae earned First-Team All-SEC honors, was named an All-American, and was recognized on the SEC Academic Honor Roll for his classroom excellence.

The 1991 NFL Draft marked a historic moment for McRae and the Tennessee program. He was selected with the seventh overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, making him the first offensive player taken that year. When teammate Antone Davis was selected just one pick later at eighth overall, it marked the first time in NFL history that one school produced two top-ten offensive tackles in the same draft.

McRae enjoyed a six-year professional career, playing five seasons for the Buccaneers and one for the Oakland Raiders. Known for his versatility, he appeared in 84 games and contributed at both tackle and guard.

After retiring from football, McRae began a successful career in business and healthcare. He returned to the University of Tennessee to earn his MBA and has since served in several top leadership roles, including CEO and COO for major national medical and cardiology platforms.
