Ron Mercer is one of the most decorated basketball players to emerge from Tennessee, achieving elite status at every level. A native of Nashville, Mercer was a two-time Tennessee Mr. Basketball at Goodpasture Christian School, where he led the program to a state runner-up finish and became a household name. He completed his prep career as a Naismith Prep Player of the Year at Oak Hill Academy.
As one of the most highly recruited players in the nation, Mercer joined the University of Kentucky under coach Rick Pitino. As a freshman in 1996, he was a key contributor to the “Untouchables” squad that captured the NCAA National Championship, famously scoring 20 points in the title game against Syracuse. During his sophomore season (1996-97), Mercer blossomed into a consensus First-Team All-American and the SEC Player of the Year, leading the Wildcats back to the National Championship game and cementing his place among the premier scorers in college basketball history.
In the 1997 NBA Draft, Mercer was selected sixth overall by the Boston Celtics. He made an immediate impact, earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 1998. Over an eight-year NBA career, he played for the Celtics, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, and New Jersey Nets. His most productive season came in 2000-01 with the Bulls, when he averaged 19.7 points per game. Mercer finished his professional career in 2005 with 5,892 points.
