What a year for Memphis native Shaun Micheel. By winning the 2003 PGA Championship, he became only the third Tennessean to win a PGA major, joining the ranks of Dr. Cary Middlecoff and Lou Graham. Ranked 169th in the world prior to his PGA Championship win, Micheel won his first major in a tournament field that included 96 of the top 100 players in the world. With the win, Micheel jumped to 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking and finished the season 32nd on the PGA money list. Along with the $1,080,000 paycheck, the Championship win also gives Micheel a five-year exemption on the PGA tour. And many more opportunities to thrill his hometown buddies at the Ridgeway Country Club in Memphis.
