During his 31 years in the Hamblen County School System at Morristown West, Mike Reed has witnessed a lot of athletic success as a coach, principal and athletic director. He was a teacher and coach for 16 years from 1967-1983. He served as Athletic Director for a total of 18 years (1987-1993 and from 2003-Present.) He was Principal for 12 years (1993-2005,) and has been on the TSSAA Board of Control for 27 years (1986-Present).
Reed was the recipient of the A. F. Bridges Sportsmanship Award for Principal of the Year—First Athletic District for the 1999 – 2000 school year. He was selected by the Hamblen County Director of Schools to participate in Tennessee Leadership Institute for Exemplary Superintendent Training through East Tennessee State University/Bellsouth Foundation during the 1994 – 1995 school year.
Reed was a Member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) from 1993 to 2005, member of the Tennessee Education Association (1966 – 2005), member of the National Education Association (1966 – 2005), and served as District and Regional Basketball Tournament Director numerous times.
Reed retired as Principal from Morristown-West in 2005, and at that time became an Assistant Principal in charge of athletics working a 100-day contract—he is still in that position today.
