One of the most successful amateur golfers in the history of our state, longtime Lookout Mountain resident Lew Oehmig has won three USGA Senior Amateur championships, which is the most ever captured by a Tennessean. In addition, he has won the Tennessee Senior Amateur on seven different occasions. But it is not only on the senior amateur level that Oehmig starred. He also won the Tennessee State Amateur an impressive eight times and was captain of the Walker Cup team. But his contributions to the sport of golf were not limited to only his great accomplishments as a player. Contributing to the sport off the fairways as well, Oehmig was president of the TGA and was instrumental in the success of the First Flight golf company. With victories in state and national events spanning five decades, it is no surprise that besides being a 1973 inductee into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, Oehmig was elected as one of seven charter members to the Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame.
