1934 was a sad year for the Memphis Chickasaws of the Southern League. That year, their manager, the legendary baseball player James Thompson “Doc” Prothro, left the ball club after seven glorious seasons at the helm. During his tenure, the Chicks won one pennant, finished second three times and third twice. One of the smartest and most aggressive managers in the league, “Doc” turned in brilliant performances during his reign. Besides his legacy as a baseball star and manager, “Doc” also left a lasting legacy in the form of his son, fellow Tennessee Hall of Fame inductee Tommy Prothro, who earned his reputation as a great player and coach of the gridiron.
