Biography

Les Robinson is a former American basketball coach who enjoyed a long and successful career in the NCAA. Born on September 23, 1942, in St Albans, West Virginia, Robinson began his coaching career at age 22 as a student assistant coach at NC State. After several years of coaching at the high school level, Robinson moved on to coach at the college level.

Robinson’s first head coaching position came in 1974 when he was named head coach at The Citadel. Robinson became the head coach at East Tennessee State University in 1985 and remained there through 1990. During his tenure at ETSU, Robinson led the team to two Southern Conference Championships and two NCAA tournament appearances. He coached many standout players during his time at ETSU, including Keith “Mister” Jennings and Calvin Talford.

After leaving ETSU in 1990, Robinson spent six years as the head coach at North Carolina State University, leading the team to one appearance in the NCAA tournament.

Robinson’s impact on ETSU basketball was felt long after his coaching career ended. In 2015, the university dedicated the basketball court at the ETSU/Mountain States Health Alliance Athletic Center in Robinson’s honor. The Les Robinson Court remains a testament to Robinson’s enduring legacy at the school.

Throughout his career, Robinson was known for his tireless work ethic, dedication to his players, and commitment to basketball. He is widely respected by his peers in the coaching community.
