Memphis native Walter Stewart began his brilliant newspaper career covering wrestling for the “Memphis Press-Scimitar.” His great talent apparent, Stewart was soon moved to the paper’s city side. At Joe Williams’ suggestion, Stewart went to New York, where he became a big name on the “World Telegram.” He switched to a Hearst paper, but did not like it, and decided to return to Memphis, where he became sports editor of the “Commercial Appeal”, a position he held until his death. We respectfully pay tribute to Walter Stewart and the men and women of the press who so eloquently record the triumphs and defeats of the sports world. Without their talent, devotion, and hard work, the world would be a sadder place indeed.
