Alva Winfred “Win” Wilfong, a Missouri native, was born on March 18, 1933. Wilfong played college basketball at the University of Missouri from 1951 – 1953.
In 1955, Wilfong returned to college basketball at the University of Memphis, where he played until 1957.
Wilfong was selected in the first round of the 1957 NBA draft by the St. Louis Hawks. In the year after being selected fourth overall, Winfred won a league championship with the Hawks.
In his four year professional career, Wilfong played for the St. Louis Hawks, Cincinnati Royals, and the Kansas City Steers. Wilfong scored 1,826 points in his career, collecting 910 rebounds and 565 assists.
It is ironic, really, that Winfred Wilfong went by “Win” because that seemed to be all he did. He was a true All-American, small-town hero. Wilfong was struck down by cancer in 1985 at the age of 52 after a truly remarkable basketball career.
