Bailes honored by Tennessee Sports Writers Hall of Fame

The late Frank “Red” Bailes, former assistant sports editor at the News Sentinel, will be inducted into the Tennessee Sports Writers Hall of Fame.

Joining Bailes in the July 9 induction at Cumberland University in Lebanon are Ed Given and John Cathey, both of whom served as sports information directors at state universities.

Bailes, who died in 2003, began his career with the News Sentinel delivering papers. After World War II, he joined he sports staff full-time, covering a wide range of subjects, including University of Tennessee basketball.

He was assistant sports editor for 24 years. Bailes was inducted into the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.

Given worked for the Nashville Banner before moving into sports information. He spent 16 years at Western Kentucky then served Middle Tennessee State from 1983 to 1998.

Cathey left the Greenville, (S.C.) News for the sports information staff at East Tennessee State in 1969. He died in 1994.
