Golden Eagles Make History

June 5th, 2018

The Tennessee Tech baseball team made history on June 4, 2018 as they advanced to the Super Regional of the NCAA baseball tournament. The number two seed Golden Eagles won the Oxford Regional which consisted of four teams: 1. Ole Miss, 2. Tennessee Tech, 3. Missouri State, 4. Saint Louis. It was not an easy road for the Golden Eagles in the double elimination regional tournament as they had to navigate their way through the loser’s bracket to advance. Weather issues forced the opening games to be played on Saturday the 2nd instead of Friday the 1st.  The Golden Eagles opened up the tournament with a 6-4 victory over the Missouri State Bears setting up a matchup with the Ole Miss Rebels the following day. Tech lost a nail-biter to the Rebels 9-8 on Sunday afternoon forcing them to play a double header that same night at 9:55 pm as the Rebels waited in the winner’s bracket. The Golden Eagles gutted out a 2-1 victory late Sunday night as starting pitcher Alex Hursey tossed a complete game against the Missouri State Bears. With that win the Golden Eagles eliminated the Bears and set up a championship matchup with the Ole Miss Rebels. The Golden Eagles went into Monday having to upset the nationally ranked (#4) Rebels two times. In the opening game on Monday the Golden eagles clobbered the Rebels 15-5 forcing a winner take all championship game the same night. In an exhilarating game the Golden Eagles found a way to win 3-2 behind a 2-run home run from 3rd baseman Trevor Putzig. With that victory the Golden eagles become the first Ohio Valley Conference team to ever advance to the NCAA Super Regional. They also added on to their program and conference record for wins (52) which they broke with their second win over Missouri State earlier in the tournament. Five members of the team earned themselves a spot on the All-Regional Team: Chase Chambers, Trevor Putzig, Nick Osborne, Brennon Kaleiwahea, and Alex Hursey. Chase Chambers was named the tournament’s most outstanding player. The next stop for the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles is Austin, Texas where they will face the Texas Longhorns in a 3 game series June 9-11. The winner will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
