The Lady Vol basketball program now has a third 2013 WNBA All-Star, as Glory Johnson was chosen for the game as a reserve and now will join former UT standouts Tamika Catchings and Candace ParkerĀ in the festivities.
The 11th Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star game will be held this Saturday, July 27, at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The festivities, which will be hosted by the Connecticut Sun for the third time in franchise history, will be telecast live by ABC Sports at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Johnson, a Knoxville native (Webb School) who concluded her career at Tennessee in 2011-12, is in her second season with the Tulsa Shock. The 6-foot-3 Johnson ranks third in the WNBA in rebounding (10.2 rpg.) and ninth in scoring (16.4 ppg.), and she is one of seven players who will be making their first all-star appearance. She’ll be playing for the Western Conference.
Reserves were chosen by the league’s 12 head coaches. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players on their own team, and selected reserves by voting for six players within their own conference, including two guards, three front court players, and one player regardless of position.
Catchings, who plays for the Indiana Fever, and Parker, who is a member of the Los Angeles Sparks, previously were named as starters for the Eastern and Western Conferences, respectively. They were chosen in a vote by fans.
Replacement players, who will take the roster spot of players who cannot play due to injury, will be named by WNBA President Laurel J. Richie on July 24. Any changes to the starting lineup necessitated by injury would subsequently be made by the head coach of the respective team.
By virtue of winning their respective conference titles last season, Indiana head coach Lin Dunn will coach the Eastern Conference, and the Western Conference will be led by Minnesota’s Cheryl Reeve.
