A Middle Tennessee State University football player was drafted into the NFL the same day he graduated from college.
Blue Raider defensive tackle Jimmy Staten was chosen to play for the Seattle Seahawks. He received a call about the draft during MTSU’s graduation ceremony on Saturday.
When he walked across the stage at Murphy Center, he was given a special acknowledgement by MTSU President Sidney McPhee.
Staten, who is from Waycross, Georgia, was All-Conference USA Honorable Mention in 2013 and was invited to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.
He completed his senior year with 30 tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss, a pass breakup and two hurries.
Staten is the first MTSU player to be drafted since 2011.
He will report to the Seahawks rookie camp in Seattle later in May.
