A professional golf event is headed to Nashville.
The Nashville Golf Open, a Web.com Tour event, will be played at the Nashville Golf & Athletic Club in June.
An official announcement was made Tuesday.
The tournament will have a purse of $550,000. It’s expected that the PGA TOUR will announce a five-year agreement to play the tournament in Nashville through 2020. It will be sponsored by Tour Visions Promotions, which is based in Brentwood.
The first tournament will be played June 13-19.
“We are excited to bring the Web.com Tour to Nashville for what should quickly become one of the best stops on Tour,” said Tour Vision Promotions CEO Patrick Nichol. “This is a wonderful golf town, and one that will graciously welcome the next generation of PGA TOUR stars each year in the traditional Southern fashion for which it is known.”
This is the third PGA event in the state. The PGA holds the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, June 9-12, and the Web.com Tour’s News-Sentinel Open is Aug. 18-21.
Proceeds from the tournament will benefit The First Tee of Middle Tennessee, a regional youth life skills program operated by the Tennessee Golf Foundation with programming locations in Nashville, Franklin, Smyrna, Murfreesboro, Clarksville, Hendersonville and Sewanee.
Nashville Golf & Athletic Club has hosted the Tennessee State Open several times since opening in 1971. The club will host the Tennessee Mid-Amateur Championship this year.
“Being the host to the first Web.com Tour Event in Middle Tennessee is a great honor for Nashville Golf & Athletic Club and we are excited for the opportunity to be a part of such a successful organization,” said Nashville Golf & Athletic Club Owner Madison Whittemore. “We are also thrilled to have the Tennessee Golf Foundation involved to help promote junior golf, furthering our ability to give back to the local community. Nashville Golf & Athletic Club has always been a club focused on the core values incorporated into the game of golf and the love of the sport.”
The Web.com Tour is similar to Triple-A baseball. Each season, the PGA TOUR makes 50 available spots on its tour to the top players on the Web.com Tour.
“The First Tee of Middle Tennessee and the TGF is honored to be a part of (Tuesday’s) special announcement,” said Tennessee Golf Foundation President Dick Horton. “We know that golf’s emerging stars that play on the Web.com Tour share a similarity with the participants involved in The First Tee, showing the perseverance to succeed in the pursuit of their goals and dreams while using the game’s core values as their playbook. While their dreams may be different, this event will support the success of young people across the region.”
