Belmont University men’s basketball head coach Rick Byrd has been named chairman of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee.
Byrd, one of the most respected and trusted voices in college basketball, assumed the role Sept. 1, and will serve as committee chair for the next two years.
Byrd succeeds outgoing chair John Dunne of Saint Peter’s.
The NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee is comprised of 13 coaches and administrators, who assess both current and proposed rules to promote consistency and fair play in the game.
In May, the committee recommended a significant focus on freedom of movement and a reassessment of the block/charge call once an offensive player has started his upward motion with the ball to attempt a field goal or pass.
Byrd enters the 2013-14 season seventh among all active NCAA Division I head coaches in career victories with 663.
