NASHVILLE, TN – March 5, 2026 – Former Tennessee prep standout and NCAA champion Ron Mercer has been named a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026. Sponsored by the Tennessee Lottery, the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame honors individuals whose achievements have made a lasting impact on the history of sports in the state of Tennessee.
“Ron Mercer’s excellence at every level of basketball is a testament to his talent and determination,” said Brad Willis, Executive Director of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. “From Nashville’s high school courts to national championships in college and a successful professional career, Ron’s legacy is one that inspires Tennessee athletes and fans alike.”
A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Mercer was twice named Tennessee Mr. Basketball while starring at Goodpasture Christian School in Madison. He went on to attend Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, a nationally elite basketball program, before playing for the University of Kentucky Wildcats. As a Wildcat, Mercer was a key contributor to Kentucky’s 1996 NCAA National Championship team, earning national recognition for his scoring and competitiveness. In 1997, he was named SEC Player of the Year and a Consensus First-Team All-American.
Following his collegiate success, Mercer was selected sixth overall in the 1997 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. He enjoyed an eight-year NBA career, also playing for the Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, and New Jersey Nets. Mercer was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1998 and finished his professional career with strong scoring contributions, including an impactful season with the Bulls where he averaged nearly 20 points per game.
“Ron’s impact on the court — whether leading Kentucky to national prominence or competing at the highest professional level — reflects the competitive spirit of Tennessee sports,” Willis added. “His induction celebrates a career that Tennessee can be proud of for generations.”
Mercer joins Monica Abbott, Jennifer Azzi, Matt Cain, Mike Clary, the late Reggie Cobb, Antone Davis, KermitDavis, Bubba Luckett, Charles McRae, David Price, and Pete Weber as announced members of the 2026 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class.
