Tennis Great Paul Annacone Announced as 2024 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

NASHVILLE, TN – February 21, 2024 – Former University of Tennessee tennis star Paul Annacone has been named to the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024. The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame pays homage to the state’s rich sports history and their impact within the community. On behalf of sponsor Tennessee Lottery, the Hall offers free admission at their downtown Nashville location Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Paul Annacone enjoyed a storied career as a tennis player and has given back to the game of tennis in every avenue he’s taken since his playing days,” said Brad Willis, Executive Director of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. “Paul is a great ambassador for the sport and is a fantastic teacher of the game to players and spectators alike. We’re excited that Paul Annacone is a member of the 2024 Class of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.”

Annacone was the University of Tennessee’s first three-time All0-American and a two-time SEC Champion. In 1984 he was the Rolex National Indoor singles champion and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Player of the Year. His 1984 singles record of 51-3 remains the best in University of Tennessee tennis history. During his 14 years on the professional tour as a player, Annacone won three ATP titles and reached a career high ranking of #12 in singles. Annacone on the 1985 Australian Open with long-time partner Christo van Rensburg. Annacone finished his career with 14 doubles titles.

After his playing career, Annacone turned to coaching. Annacone coached Pete Sampras to nine of his 14 Grand Slam Titles. Called “The Court Whisperer” by Sports Illustrated, Annacone also coached Tim Henman and Roger Federer to great success. Annacone currently coaches Taylor Fritz and serves as an analyst and commentator for the Tennis Channel.

Annacone joins TSU Track legend Jean Patton Latimer and Austin Peay basketball coaching legend Dave Loos as the only announced members of the 2024 Class. The full 2024 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class will be released over the coming weeks.

The 2024 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony, presented by the Tennessee Titans, will be held Saturday, July 20nd at the Omni Nashville Downtown. Ticket information will be announced at a later date.
