July 28th, 2013

Dale Ellis, Tennessee’s sixth all-time leading scorer, will have his No. 14 jersey retired during the Vols’ March 1 game against Vanderbilt, UT announced Saturday.

Ellis scored 2,065 points in his four-year career in Knoxville before playing 19 years in the NBA for nine different tea ms.

UT had previously announced its intentions to retire Ellis’ number. Now the date is set. The Vols’ game against Vanderbilt will be nationally televised on either ESPN orESPN2. A 6-foot-7 forward from Marietta, Ga., Ellis was a fi rst-tea m A l l-American and SEC player of the year in both 1982 and 1983. He averaged 21.2 and 22.6 points per game in those respective seasons.

Ellis’ tally of 2,065 points with the Vols would have been considerably higher had a 3-point line existed at the time. He made 1,719 3-pointers in his NBA career, ninth-most a ll-time.
