Joe Fisher, was named Tennessee’s Co-Sportscaster of the Year Thursday by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
Fisher, who is in his 16th season as the play-by-play voice at Vanderbilt, shares the honor with Mike Keith of the Tennessee Titans Radio Network. The honor was the first of Fisher’s career.
A Nashville native, Fisher got his start in the broadcasting business as the sports director at WSM Radio. He then transitioned into the television business as the weekend sports anchor at WSMV-TV Channel 4. Fisher later moved to WKRN-TV Channel 2 before leaving the industry to work for the public relations firm, DV&L.
While at DV&L, Vanderbilt contacted Fisher about broadcasting women’s basketball games, which he did for 2 1/2 years before officially being named director of broadcasting in 1998.
Finalists for the award were nominated by NSSA members from mid-October to mid-November. Final balloting took place during the month of December.
Fisher will be honored during the 55th Annual NSSA Awards Weekend, June 7-9 in Salisbury, N.C
